Hey there, welcome back to Anasua’s creative zone. I am Anasua Ghosh, I am an author, mentor, writing coach, and blogger. I mentor aspiring writers to chase their writing dreams. Currently, I am writing a psychopath thriller called The Ripper.

Today, we are going to discuss an essential element of fantasy novels. It is the magic system. If you are a fantasy writer, you will need to develop this system carefully. If magic works for you it will elevate your book to a great level, if it fails, it will take your book down with it. So, if you are writing a book that has fantasy elements, you will need to learn about the magic system.

Before Getting Started

Magic can be fun. When you are creating a magic system for a fantasy novel you will get overwhelmed. Every fantasy writer goes through the same excitement at the initial stage. However, the magic system should be well crafted. It should be something that appears to be realistic. The work can be difficult and frequently writers fail here. For this reason, you should be a little careful when you are creating a magic system for a fantasy novel.

The Origin Of Magic

Yes, your magic system must have an origin, a backstory. It cannot just appear out of nowhere. Even if it does, it should appear from somewhere. It should either come from some entity or maybe another planet. You need to decide this and then spend time crafting the backstory in detail. If the magic system is a part of your fantasy world, you still have to figure out its origin. The Magic system and its origin make stories more pleasant to read.

The Users

Who can use magic in your fantasy world? Does everyone have magic powers or some rare few? Are people born with magical power or do they practice to develop it? Find answers to these questions before writing your fantasy novel.

The Weakness

Magic cannot be all-powerful. Every system has some weaknesses. If your magic spells are unbreakable, people will find it hard to believe. Therefore, create a spell with some weaknesses. It could have a time limitation. It could have individual limitations (it may not work on certain people). Figure these out if you are writing a book with a magic system in it.

Lastly, every fantasy book does not have to have a magic system. However, whenever we hear the word fantasy, we think about magic. Therefore, your book too needs a magic system if it has fantasy elements in it. My last release Kingdom Of Clay Book 1 has a dark magic system. I had to work hard to create it by doing a lot of research work on the Vedic Tantra system. So, you don’t have to invent everything. You can take inspiration from different cultures and rituals.

So, with this, I am going to wrap it up. I will be back with more on writing. Till then keep chasing your writing dreams. If you want me to cover any writing-related topic, please let me know in the comment.
